The worldwide success of Northern Ireland Pipe Bands was recognised today at Parliament Buildings, Stormont with cross party support.
The event was hosted by Robin Swann MLA, with a large audience of MLA’s and representatives from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Ulster Scots Agency and other statutory and voluntary organisations.
It was a huge opportunity for the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (Northern Ireland Branch) to showcase how they promoted and advanced pipe band music here in Northern Ireland.
George Ussher, President of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association said:
‘’The worldwide success that has been achieved by RSPBANI bands in competition and sheer musicianship has been assisted greatly through working in partnerships with organisations such as the Arts Council, the Ulster Scots Agency and local Councils. Last year three world Pipe Band titles along with three Drum Major titles were won by RSPBANI members. The Branch firmly believes that this success is built through the teaching that is delivered by member bands and facilitated through the RSPBANI School. This year the School had the highest number of students at the largest number of venues since the Branch established its teaching facility back in 1980.’’
Robin Swann MLA said, “I was honoured to host the event and the talent of young members on display shows the quality of teaching at the RSPBANI Branch School. The events organised by RSPBANI bring a huge economic benefit to Northern Ireland.”
He went on to say, “ I was glad to see cross party support and the support from the First and Deputy First Minister. I would like to endorse my own Party Leaders comments when Mike Nesbitt said we will support the RSPBANI in any way possible.”
The vision of the RSPBANI Branch is to make Northern Ireland the best place in the world to live as a pipe band enthusiast. I believe that the Branch is already well on its way to achieving this vision’
The audience at the event was treated to an impressive display of talent from three young musicians and a drum major display.
